升级你的研究生 PS:50 个让你显得学术成熟的词汇,配中、韩、日申请人各自的常见误区。

你的语法没毛病,故事也讲得动人。但你的词汇正在告诉招生委员会一件你不想让他们知道的事:英语不是你的母语。

这是中、韩、日申请人在写美、英两国研究生 PS 时最普遍的问题。不是语法错,不是逻辑断层,而是——语法上完全合规、但被学术读者读起来"不对劲"的词汇。

"I am very interested in this research area" 和 "I am compelled by the intersection of computational linguistics and cognitive science" 之间的差距,不是语法,是语体——语言里那个说明"你是谁、你是不是属于这场学术对话"的社交层。

招生委员会一年读上千份 PS,他们说不出哪份"读起来像母语者"、哪份"读起来像翻译过来的",但他们能感觉到。最终也会影响判断。

本文给你 50 个词,分 5 类,配 PS 例句,列出不同语言背景常见的错误,并给出一套你可以用在自己稿子上的"前后对比"审计法。


词汇为什么是"学术成熟"的信号

学术写作有一些被语言学家研究多年的特征。Biber、Johansson、Leech、Conrad 与 Finegan(1999)在 Longman Grammar of Spoken and Written English 里详细记录了名词化、模糊化、立场标记等如何把学术散文与其他语体区分开来。这些不是修饰,而是表明作者懂"知识主张在学术话语里如何运作"。

PS 运行在学术语体里。它不是 cover letter,不是 TOEFL 作文。它处在"思想叙事"和"专业论证"的交叉点,词汇必须同时反映两者。

弱版本不是错,TOEFL 写作能拿 7 分。但放进 PS 就是错——它们没有展示你已经"像一个研究生那样思考"。


第 1 类:研究经历词汇(10 个)

下面这些动词和短语用来描述你在实验室、田野、毕业论文或独立研究中做过的事。所有语言背景的人最常犯的同一个错误是:所有事都用 "study" 和 "learn",而研究语境要求精准。

1. Investigate 做实证研究的首选。表明你提出了一个具体问题并系统性地追问下去。

  • 弱:I studied the effects of temperature on reaction rate.
  • 强:I investigated how temperature variations in the 20–40°C range affected enzymatic activity in E. coli cultures.

2. Synthesize 适合整合多源、多框架、多数据流的工作。

  • "I synthesized findings from 14 studies to identify a common pattern in L2 acquisition rates across Indo-European language learners."

3. Evaluate 适合评估性工作——比较方法、检验假设、批判模型。

  • "I evaluated three competing frameworks for predicting urban heat island intensity and found that the Oke (1987) model consistently outperformed alternatives in low-density cities."

4. Examine 比 "investigate" 略微少几分实验感,适合定性和人文研究。

  • "My undergraduate thesis examined the representation of migration narratives in contemporary Korean cinema."

5. Demonstrate 适合数据能证明主张的成果——你有证据时再用。

  • "The results demonstrated a statistically significant correlation (p < 0.01) between early-life stress markers and adult inflammatory response."

6. Verify 适合复制或验证类工作。

  • "I designed an experiment to verify the reproducibility of Huang et al.'s (2021) findings under modified conditions."

7. Establish 适合"立起来"了什么的贡献——基线、框架、先例。

  • "Our team worked to establish a reliable protocol for extracting viable RNA from archival tissue samples."

8. Corroborate 适合"支持已有证据"的发现——在科学和社科写作中很重要。

  • "My analysis of secondary data corroborated earlier findings that rural access to broadband correlates with higher educational attainment."

9. Replicate 适合重复研究——在开放科学语境里越来越重要。

  • "I attempted to replicate the key experiment from the original paper and found partial support for the reported effect."

10. Analyze 最通用的研究动词——用在你"拆开看构成"时。

  • "I analyzed 200 hours of classroom interaction data to identify patterns in teacher feedback strategies."

写给中国申请人: 中文学术文化倾向于淡化方法论贡献。把 "I learned to use X software" 改成 "I analyzed [dataset] using X, developing proficiency in [specific technique]"。亮点应该在"分析"这件事上,而不是"学会用工具"。

写给韩国申请人: 韩国学术写作常默认被动结构("It was found that...")。美国项目期待 PS 里用第一人称主动语态("I found that...")。主动语态读起来更自信,是强烈推荐的形式。

写给日本申请人: 日本申请人在描述协作工作时常常低估自己的具体贡献("We conducted research on X")。美国招生委员会想知道你具体做了什么。"I was responsible for data collection and contributed to the statistical analysis" 要强得多。


第 2 类:动机词汇(10 个)

这是非英语母语者 PS 最容易塌掉的一段——不是动机弱,而是词汇没承担起应有的情感和智识分量。

11. Compelled "Compelled" 带智识紧迫感——你别无选择,问题本身在召唤你。

12. Drawn to 比 "compelled" 柔和——适合描述渐进而非突发的智识吸引。

  • "I have been drawn to questions of urban inequality since my fieldwork in Shenzhen's manufacturing districts."

13. Committed to 表达持续投入——不只是兴趣,而是长期的参与。

  • "I am committed to research that bridges computational approaches and humanistic inquiry."

14. Aspire 面向未来的词——用于目标,不用于背景。要配一个具体目标,不要泛泛地配一个领域。

  • "I aspire to develop predictive models that could inform early intervention in adolescent mental health."

15. Cultivate 适合通过有意识的努力培养出来的能力、视角或兴趣。

20. Motivated by 直接、清晰——其他词显得过头时的稳妥默认选项。

第 3 类:目标与未来词汇(10 个)

弱目标陈述是非母语者 PS 最常见的问题之一。"I hope to contribute to the field" 没有给委员会任何信息。目标应该具体、根植于你的研究背景、并指向未来。

21. Leverage 适合"过去的能力变成未来工作的工具"。

  • "I intend to leverage my training in natural language processing to develop tools for analyzing political discourse at scale."

22. Build upon 适合智识上的延续——表明你知道自己的工作处在哪条研究脉络里。

  • "I aim to build upon Cresswell's (2014) framework for place identity by incorporating digital mobility data."

23. Advance 适合"把一个领域或项目往前推"的贡献。

所有背景的常见错误: 模糊目标。"I hope to advance the field" → "I aim to investigate the relationship between X and Y in order to address the gap identified by Z."


第 4 类:过渡与论证词汇(10 个)

招生官在评估你的 PS 是否"具备智识结构"——不是经历列表,而是关于"为什么你和这个项目相配"的逻辑论证。过渡词就是这条论证的骨架。

31. Furthermore 追加相关证据或推理——不要拿 "also" 凑数。

  • "Furthermore, my thesis committee included two faculty members who publish in the same journal as Professor Davis, whom I hope to work with at your program."

32. Consequently 因果信号——适合"一件事导致了下一件事"。

  • "The results were inconsistent with our initial model; consequently, I spent the following semester redesigning the experimental protocol."

33. In light of 适合"在某个证据背景下做决定或解读"。

  • "In light of these findings, I became convinced that quantitative methods alone cannot capture the social dimensions of this problem."

34. With respect to 正式精度标记——适合从大话题收窄到具体一点。

  • "With respect to my research experience, I have two years of fieldwork in applied linguistics and one year of computational analysis."

35. Notably 适合标识列表中最重要或最意外的一项。

第 5 类:模糊化与限定词汇(10 个)

模糊化是学术成熟的标志,不是软弱。在 PS 里,模糊化体现你懂"知识是怎么运作的"——主张要与证据成比例,确定性是赚来的,不是默认的。这一点对许多非母语申请人来说是反直觉的,他们怕模糊化听起来不自信。事实上,在学术写作里,它读起来是严谨的。

41. Arguably 表达"可被辩护、但有争议"的立场——展现智识上的勇气而不"过头"。

42. Evidence suggests 实证主张的标准学术模糊化公式。

改后并没有更长,但更具体、更精准,所用语体也透出"研究生级思维"。


不同语言背景的常见误区

这些是从上千份申请文书里观察到的模式,是实操指引,不是对任何群体的概括判断。

中国申请人: 套路化开头("Since I was a child, I have been interested in...")、过度使用 "I am very interested in"、对自己成绩过度谦虚("I was lucky to...")、回避直接的第一人称主张。美国项目期待自信、具体、有证据支持的主张。把 "I was fortunate to" 换成 "I was selected to",或者直接陈述成绩。

韩国申请人: 弱动词选择("I did""I made""I worked on")、研究描述里被动多于主动、目标过于含糊("I want to study more about this field")。把动词换强(investigate、analyze、evaluate),把目标具体化("I aim to examine [具体问题] using [具体方法]")。

日本申请人: 间接的自我推介("Our lab achieved..." 而不是 "I contributed to...")、对成绩的低调处理、即使智识上合理也不愿批评既有工作。美国招生官期待你清楚地认领自己的贡献,并对文献展示批判性思考。

Q3:PS 比 TOEFL 写作要正式多少? 词汇上更正式,结构上更不正式。TOEFL 写作奖励显式的"论点—证据—结论"结构。PS 是叙事驱动的,但全篇用学术词汇。PS 里随便用第一人称——这是被期待的;TOEFL 写作里第一人称要少得多。

Q4:导师说我的 PS 听起来太正式,可能吗? 可能。"the investigation of the phenomenon of..." 这种名词化结构,可以直接换成 "I investigated...",反而更有力量。学术语体不等于堆砌名词化。重点是精准和具体,不是官僚式的复杂。

Q5:这些词汇选择对加拿大、英国、澳大利亚的项目同样适用吗? 适用。英国和澳大利亚项目对正式语体的弹性略大一些,但核心原则——避开翻译腔、展示学术词汇深度——对任何英语授课研究生项目都成立。
