海關抬頭問你:「What is the purpose of your visit?」

(Retrieval)
Paul Nation 在 2001 年奠基的詞彙研究,把「會」一個字拆成兩種:receptive(看到、聽到能理解)跟 productive(要說、要寫時拿得出來)。
但學在一句「When the officer asked about my purpose of visit, I said: Tourism — I'm here for two weeks」裡,你建立的記憶痕跡含括了周圍語境、口吻與該怎麼回應。
Rhythm Word
Rhythm Word
Rhythm Word
這些不是課本式的範本,而是像「Can I still make my connecting flight if my first leg is delayed by 45 minutes?」
Rhythm Word

- 太間接:「If it would not cause too much trouble, perhaps it might be possible to look at whether there could be any possibility of an early check-in...」
- 自然又直接:「Could I check in early? My flight arrived this morning and I've been up since 3 AM.」
「I want to...」
「I want...」
- 「I want a window seat.」→「I'd like a window seat, please.」
- 「I want to check out early.」→「Could I check out at 9 AM instead of 11?」
- 「I want a refund.」→「I'd like to request a refund for this charge, please.」
縮寫「I'd like」(I would like)是整套旅遊英文裡最萬用的一句,練到反射性脫口而出。
「Excuse me」「Pardon」「Sorry」
- 「Excuse me」——叫別人注意(「Excuse me, could you help me?」)或要借過(「Excuse me, I just need to get through」)。
- 「What is the purpose of your visit?」→「Tourism.」/「A business conference.」/「Visiting my daughter who studies here.」
- 「How long are you planning to stay?」→「Two weeks.」/「Ten days.」
- 「Where are you staying?」→「The Marriott in downtown Chicago.」/「At my friend's apartment in Brooklyn.」
- 「Have you visited the United States before?」→「Yes, twice.」/「No, this is my first time.」
- 「right」(右邊)vs.
最重要的旅遊英文類別包含:機場與報到(boarding pass、gate、carry-on)、入境用語(purpose of visit、visa、customs declaration)、飯店用語(check-in、amenities、各種需求)、餐廳用語(點餐、飲食限制、結帳)以及緊急用語(lost、stolen、cancel、refund)。
最清楚的方式是直接陳述:「I have a [nut / dairy / gluten / shellfish] allergy.」一般偏好可說「I'm vegetarian」或「I'm vegan」。如果是嚴重過敏,加一句「It's an allergy, not just a preference」——讓廚房知道交叉污染是健康風險,不是個人偏好。也可以點餐前先問「Does this contain [ingredient]?」。
沒聽懂就說「I'm sorry, could you repeat that?」或「Could you speak a little more slowly, please?」
某一天,海關會問你「What is the purpose of your visit?」。
